PRESS RELEASE Injury to a Child 06-07-2012

Parker County Sheriff’s investigators obtained an arrest warrant for child abuse charges on a Springtown man Thursday, June 7, 2012.
The suspect, identified as Darrell Eugene Read, 22, will be formally charged with injury to a child, a third-degree felony.
Cook Children’s Medical Center staff in Fort Worth contacted Sheriff’s investigators after the child was admitted to the emergency room Tuesday.
Medical staff examined the child and conducted tests. The results consisted of “non accidental trauma” injuries.
The child, a 9-month-old female, sustained multiple bruises on both legs, upper thigh regions, buttocks, face, both hips and back as well as suffered from severe diaper rash.
Sheriff’s investigators interviewed the parents of the child, discovering the mother went to work just before 7 a.m., and observed the child without injury. Upon returning home later that same day around 3:30 p.m., the father, Read, told the mother to “go look at your daughter,” and she observed the bruising.
The child was admitted to the hospital.
Sheriff’s investigators interviewed the suspect in jail late Wednesday. Read told them he spanked the infant on several occasions Tuesday, causing the bruising. He admitted he spanked her and “popped her in the mouth” for “crying and fussing,” and that she needed to “learn a lesson,” and be “disciplined.”
After the interview and obtaining two hospital affidavits explaining the injuries, investigators obtained the warrant for Read.
Read was booked into the Parker County Jail Wednesday after giving deputies a fictitious name.
Sheriff’s deputies attempted to contact Read for several outstanding traffic warrants issued by Reno Police Department, Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and Blue Mound Police Department. As deputies left Read’s residence in Springtown, they observed him walking on Crown Road and Tremont Road about one block from his home. He was additionally charged with Failure to Identify Fugitive/Intentionally Give False Information, a Class A Misdemeanor, after identifying himself as “Ricky.”
Read later correctly identified himself to jail personnel.
Sheriff’s investigators intend on serving Read the injury to a child warrant today, while he remains incarcerated.
The case will be filed with the Parker County District Attorney’s Office for consideration of prosecution.
The child is said to be in fair, stable condition and was released from the hospital into custody of Child Protective Services, pending a further investigation from CPS.
