Parker County Sheriff’s Extradition and Courts Unit has grown over the last several years, and Parker County Sheriff Larry Fowler anticipates continued growth within the division.

In 2008, the unit made 305 out-of-county extraditions. In 2014, out-of-county extraditions increased to 398.

The expansion to the Parker County Jail in late 2008, eliminated the need for the majority of out-of-county inmate housing contracts, but not the need for extradition, leaving the unit solely responsible for extraditing inmates from around the state and country.

The unit is made up of three deputies, who drove more than 89,000 miles extraditing inmates since Jan. 1, 2014.

In Aug. 2014, the same deputies also began transporting juveniles to and from detention centers to local courts for hearings, including return trips.

In the last quarter of 2014, just 21 juvenile transports consisted of 110.5 averaged man-hours for the county and unit.

The same two deputies additionally assume other duties and responsibilities such as filling in for court duty during trials when time allows for and hearings and also serving misdemeanor warrants. In 2014, the unit made 99 mental commitment transports and hearings with return trips, 210 court commitments for other inmates, they served 81 bench warrants and 21 parole warrants with 791 total arrests.

The deputies also made more than 200 appearances at the Parker County District Court and County Courts at Law.

Sheriff’s Captain Ray Wright continually keeps the unit operating smoothly.

“Captain Wright has done a great job at handling the increased workload in the transport division,” said Sheriff Fowler. “He oversees several divisions and keeps them all running efficiently. The number of extraditions speaks for itself, and is expected to increase with the rise in population and crimes.”
